Olympic de marseille in Abidjan: a pre-season tour with social and political impact

Olympic de Marseille’s pre-season tour in Abidjan: a blend of sport, diplomacy and social commitment

The Olympic de Marseille (OM) concluded a 72-hour pre-season tour in Abidjan on Saturday, July 18. The Phocaean club arrived in Côte d’Ivoire on July 15, accompanied by a delegation of 80 people, including 24 players led by coach Bruno Genesio.

On Friday, July 17, the OM faced Yamoussoukro FC, a recently promoted team in the Ivorian Ligue 1, at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. This encounter marked a rare opportunity for a club from the interior of the country to compete against a French Ligue 1 team, away from the usual Abidjan-based giants.

Prior to the match, an unconventional opening ceremony brought together Ivorian government officials with the Marseille delegation. The previous day, the Olympians trained at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium, where striker Faris Moumbagna worked alongside the group.

More than just a sporting visit: a strategic partnership

The OM’s stay in Côte d’Ivoire was not merely a sporting event. It was part of the Sublime Côte d’Ivoire partnership, renewed in April 2026 and extended until 2029. This promotional agreement is estimated to bring the club approximately 3.275 billion West African CFA francs—nearly 5 million euros—annually.

On July 14, three Ivorian ministers — Siandou Fofana (Tourism), Françoise Remarck (Culture), and Adjé Silas Metch (Sports) — jointly held a press conference to rally support for the event. The Ministry of Tourism had previously announced the club’s arrival on its official social media platform.

This coordinated government mobilization underscores how Abidjan views the OM’s visit as a national branding opportunity, intertwining tourism, cultural image, and sports diplomacy rather than a routine pre-season training camp.

Off-field initiatives: blending sport with social responsibility

Beyond the pitch, the OM’s agenda included community engagement. Players were scheduled to visit children in difficult situations in Abidjan, alongside public training sessions organized during their stay.

Côte d’Ivoire’s evolving sports tourism strategy

The arrival of the OM reinforces Côte d’Ivoire’s ongoing efforts to develop sports tourism, a strategy championed by the Ministry of Tourism and Leisure for several years. The partnership with Marseille, now extended to 2029, stands as one of the most visible international symbols of this initiative. For Yamoussoukro FC, facing a Ligue 1 team provided unprecedented exposure for a club based outside the capital, Abidjan.

OM’s new leadership makes its mark

Stéphane Richard, who officially became president of the OM on July 2, 2026, praised the partnership as a highlight of the club’s summer preparation. His presence in Côte d’Ivoire alongside Bruno Genesio marked one of the first international engagements under his new leadership.

The Marseille delegation was set to return to France on Saturday, following a visit that successfully combined athletic preparation, diplomatic engagement, and image-building initiatives for both parties.
