Niger and Turkey deepen ties with historic ankara visit

Niger and Türkiye solidify strategic alliance during landmark Ankara visit

The diplomatic relationship between Niger and Türkiye reached new heights this week during an official visit to Ankara by Nigerien President General Abdourahamane Tiani. This marked his first international trip outside Africa since assuming office, underscoring the growing importance of the partnership between the two nations.

The state visit culminated in the signing of multiple cooperation agreements spanning critical sectors. Key highlights included the establishment of a joint economic and trade commission (JETCO), a 2026-2030 higher education cooperation protocol, an agreement for managing the Niger-Türkiye friendship hospital, and a diplomatic cooperation memorandum.

During their discussions at the presidential palace, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Tiani emphasized expanding collaboration across defense, energy, mining, agriculture, commerce, and investment. Erdogan announced the creation of a dedicated mechanism to boost business opportunities between Ankara and Niamey.

The Turkish leader reaffirmed his country’s commitment to African partners facing security challenges, particularly in the Sahel region. He highlighted plans to strengthen military training and intelligence-sharing initiatives while emphasizing that Ankara’s Africa policy is built on mutual respect, equal partnership, and shared benefits.

Erdogan pointed to several ongoing Turkish initiatives in Niger, including the friendship hospital, rural development projects, and educational programs through the Maarif Foundation. He noted that nearly 500 Nigerien students are currently pursuing higher education in Türkiye.

President Tiani reciprocated the sentiment, describing the relationship as strategically vital for Niger. He traced the deepening ties to Erdogan’s 2013 visit to Niger and praised Türkiye’s support in combating armed groups in the Sahel, which he credited with enhancing Niger’s security capabilities and regional stability.
