President Goïta initiates major healthcare expansion with 15 new hospitals

In a decisive move for the nation’s health sector, the President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, has officially launched the Presidential Emergency Hospital Project. The symbolic laying of the first stone took place at the Korofina Reference Health Centre in Bamako, signaling the start of a transformative initiative for Mali.

Colonel-Major Assa Badiallo Touré, the Minister of Health and Social Development, emphasized that this undertaking follows the recommendations of the December 2024 National Health Forum. The primary goal is to democratize access to medical care and significantly elevate the standard of health services across the country.

A comprehensive overhaul of the national hospital network

This ambitious strategy involves a radical modernization of the existing medical infrastructure. The plan includes the construction of 15 state-of-the-art hospitals and the upgrading of Reference Health Centres (CSREF) within Bamako to full district hospital status. Entirely funded by the national budget, the construction timeline is set for 12 months in Bamako and 24 months for regional projects.

The Presidential Emergency Hospital Project focuses on three strategic pillars:

  • Upgrading the CSREF in all seven districts of Bamako into comprehensive district hospitals.
  • Establishing new district hospitals in the towns of Bla and Kangaba.
  • Developing modern regional hospitals in San, Koutiala, Bougouni, Dioïla, Nioro, Bandiagara, and Koulikoro.

These new facilities will be outfitted with cutting-edge medical technology and expanded patient capacity. Notably, specialized services such as hemodialysis units will be integrated into hospitals in Bamako’s 1st and 6th districts.

Strategic priorities and operational oversight

During the event, President Goïta reaffirmed that health is a fundamental driver of national development. He instructed the Ministry of Health to ensure that public services remain uninterrupted during the building phase and that all deadlines are strictly met. The ultimate mission is to bring superior healthcare closer to the citizens, minimize the need for medical evacuations abroad, and relieve pressure on existing medical centers.
