Legal proceedings have been initiated following Ousmane Sonko’s controversial statements about Touba, sparking a judicial investigation request. A citizen, identifying himself as Serigne Modou Maroun Niang, descendant of Touba’s revered founder and a Senegalese entrepreneur, has formally petitioned the Public Prosecutor at the High Court of Dakar. The complaint seeks to probe the alleged defamatory remarks attributed to the leader of the PASTEF party.
In a formal submission dated July 14, 2026, the complainant argues that Sonko’s public assertion—claiming that “dirty money infiltrated the holy city of Touba”—inflicts severe reputational harm on the religious hub and its residents. The city, founded on the principles of faith, integrity, and devotion instilled by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, stands as a symbol of moral and spiritual legacy in Senegal.
According to the filing, the complainant demands that the Prosecutor’s Office initiate an immediate inquiry, summon Sonko to clarify his statements, and provide supporting evidence. The petition further requests comprehensive investigations to verify the claims, with potential legal action for offenses such as defamation, dissemination of false information, or other violations under Senegalese law.
The complainant claims possession of substantial evidence, including video recordings, transcripts of the incriminating remarks, and media publications documenting the statements. This legal move arrives amid escalating political tensions, potentially setting the stage for further judicial confrontation if the prosecution proceeds with the inquiry.
