Germany clinches world cup last 16 spot with dramatic win over Ivory Coast

A late strike from Deniz Undav secured Germany’s progression to the knockout stages after a fiercely contested 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto.

Few matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have matched the intensity of Saturday’s showdown between Germany and Ivory Coast in Toronto. The two sides engaged in a relentless battle, trading blows in a stadium brimming with energy, but it was the German side who emerged victorious after a dramatic finale.

Deniz Undav, who had already equalized with a clinical finish, delivered the knockout blow in stoppage time, slotting home a rebound from close range to seal a 2-1 win (90+4′). The Ivorians, despite their relentless pressing, will rue missed opportunities, including a glaring chance for Simon Adingra when clean through on Manuel Neuer in the 88th minute.

A game of two halves

Germany began cautiously, wary of Ivory Coast’s pacey transitions. Kai Havertz nearly punished them early, his header brilliantly saved by Yahia Fofana after a Joshua Kimmich cross (10′). Odilon Kossounou then diverted a fierce long-range effort from Félix Nmecha over the bar (21′).

Ivory Coast struck first through Franck Kessié, who capitalized on a Yan Diomandé cross to put the Elephants ahead (1-0, 30′). The goal stemmed from a well-orchestrated counterattack, highlighting their ability to exploit German defensive vulnerabilities.

Germany responded with urgency. Nadiem Amiri, introduced from the bench, found space in the box, and his cross was met by Undav’s equalizer, a poacher’s finish that leveled the contest (1-1, 68′). The introduction of fresh legs proved decisive, as Julian Nagelsmann’s men grew in confidence.

Defensive resilience tested

Emerse Faé’s side showed resilience, particularly in midfield, where they sought to stifle Germany’s buildup. Wilfried Singo, despite positional uncertainties, was a towering presence, recovering relentlessly to thwart German advances. His forced exit through injury in the 80th minute, however, left a void that Ivory Coast struggled to fill.

Ivory Coast nearly restored their lead in the second half. Oulaï (51′) and Diomandé (56′) squandered gilt-edged chances, both failing to capitalize on well-worked moves. The pressure mounted, but Germany’s backline, marshaled by a composed Antonio Rüdiger, held firm.

Germany advances, Ivory Coast left waiting

The result means Germany top their group with two wins from two games, while Ivory Coast must now rely on other results to progress. Though the Elephants showed character and tactical discipline, their inability to convert key moments proved costly. Both sides displayed qualities that bode well for the tournament ahead, but only one could celebrate at full-time.
