Gabon court upholds detention of leading opposition figure
Gabonese opposition leader Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze remains in custody after a Libreville appeals court denied his motion to nullify proceedings on Tuesday. His legal team argues the detention violates Gabonese law and constitutes an abuse of process.

Appeals court confirms continued detention
Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, Gabon’s most prominent opposition figure who challenged President Brice Oligui Nguema in the 2025 election, has been held since April 16 while authorities investigate alleged embezzlement and fraud charges dating back to 2008. His legal team maintains the allegations are time-barred and legally unsustainable.
Defense alleges procedural violations
Attorney Arthur Vercken filed a formal complaint citing ‘serious violations’ of Gabonese law and due process guarantees. The opposition party Ensemble pour le Gabon claims Bilie-By-Nze was detained under ‘harsh conditions’ and denied access to counsel during initial questioning before being formally charged.
President denies interference
President Brice Oligui Nguema stated in a recent interview that the case falls entirely within the judiciary’s purview. ‘This is a private legal matter with no executive involvement,’ he emphasized while affirming Gabon’s commitment to judicial independence. Bilie-By-Nze previously served as Prime Minister under former President Ali Bongo and had criticized recent government policies, including social media restrictions and nationality law reforms.
