In a bold move that has sparked fresh debate, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has publicly congratulated Argentina on their World Cup campaign, despite the heated controversies surrounding the team’s performance.

In a letter addressed to Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Infantino praised the Albiceleste for their journey in the United States, calling it a “magnificent achievement.” The letter, made public by the AFA, arrived just days after Argentina’s narrow 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain in the final.

The gesture comes amid ongoing criticism of Argentina’s conduct during the tournament. The team faced accusations of aggressive play and alleged favoritism, with some rival coaches—including Egypt’s Hossam Hassan—suggesting the team received preferential treatment from FIFA. Hassan’s remarks followed Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Egypt in the Round of 16, when he implied his side was disadvantaged by refereeing decisions.

Yet Infantino’s letter stands in stark contrast to such skepticism. He wrote, “I wish to reiterate my heartfelt congratulations on this significant success for Argentine football.” He further emphasized, “The 2026 World Cup will remain etched in our memories as an unforgettable celebration of the game (…) The Albiceleste’s outstanding performance played a pivotal role in making this edition a truly exceptional event that captivated millions of football fans worldwide.”

Argentina’s future looks bright, says FIFA chief

Infantino’s message extended beyond the players, acknowledging the collective effort behind Argentina’s achievements. “Please convey my deepest congratulations to everyone who contributed to this magnificent outcome: the players, coach Lionel Scaloni, the technical and medical staff, and of course, the passionate supporters who stood by the team throughout the competition.”

He added, “These triumphs are always the result of hard work, professionalism, and meticulous attention to detail, but also passion, commitment, and love for this beautiful sport. This bodes very well for the future and will undoubtedly pave the way for further great successes in Argentine football.”

The letter concluded with a warm wish for Tapia, expressing hope to see him “very soon” at future competitions. However, it remains unclear whether Infantino extended similar congratulations to the federations of Spain, England, or France—all of whom reached the semifinals alongside Argentina. To date, none of the three have publicly shared a similar letter.
