In Burkina Faso, at least fifty soldiers and Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP) were killed on Saturday, July 4th, following coordinated jihadist attacks claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaïda affiliate. The assaults targeted multiple regions, including the north, northwest, and southwest of the country, leaving several military camps looted and weapons seized by the militants.

The offensive began around 5 AM, when JNIM fighters stormed the military camp in Di, located in the Sourou province of northwest Burkina Faso. After intense clashes, the jihadists breached the camp before retreating. Local reports indicate that at least 23 soldiers and 11 VDP members were killed in the attack. A video released by JNIM later showed the group claiming to have counted 22 bodies of Burkinabè military personnel and VDP volunteers before their withdrawal.
widespread destruction across multiple regions
JNIM also claimed responsibility for two additional attacks in the southwest and central-west regions, specifically in Dalan and Tiéré. These assaults resulted in the deaths of at least 18 soldiers, with significant material damage reported in both areas. Earlier that same day, jihadists targeted Thiou and Séguénéga in the north, though no fatalities were reported. However, civilian vehicles were set ablaze, according to local accounts.
Despite the scale of the violence, neither the Burkinabè military nor government officials have issued an official response regarding the coordinated attacks. Meanwhile, footage of the assaults continues to circulate widely on social media, amplifying concerns over the escalating insurgency.
