Côte d’Ivoire unveils ambitious high-speed rail project to connect Abidjan and transform national development

Côte d’Ivoire is poised to embark on a monumental journey, significantly upgrading its national infrastructure. Under the comprehensive National Development Program (PND) 2026-2030, the government has announced plans for a state-of-the-art high-speed rail (TGV) system, designed to forge a crucial link between the country’s southern and northern regions. This flagship initiative forms a core component of a broader economic and territorial transformation strategy, aimed at positioning Côte d’Ivoire as an indispensable hub within West Africa.

Côte d’Ivoire aims to join the select group of nations boasting a cutting-edge, high-speed rail network. The forthcoming Ivorian TGV will span a 640-kilometer corridor, connecting the vibrant economic hub of Abidjan to Ferkessédougou, with key stops in Yamoussoukro, Bouaké, and Korhogo along the route.

Beyond its impressive technical scope, this infrastructure project is envisioned as a powerful catalyst for national integration. It promises to seamlessly link the country’s primary economic centers, drastically reducing travel times across diverse regions.

According to Souleymane Diarrassouba, the Minister of Planning and Development, the journey between Abidjan and Yamoussoukro could be completed in a mere 45 minutes. This significant advancement is poised to reshape daily routines and professional lives, potentially encouraging professionals to reside in the political capital while pursuing careers in the economic capital.

Metro, airports, roads: a nationwide development agenda

The TGV initiative is strategically integrated into a broader vision for modernizing Côte d’Ivoire’s transportation infrastructure. The government has also confirmed that the Abidjan Metro, a 37-kilometer urban rail line, is slated to commence operations by 2029.

The aviation sector is also experiencing significant expansion. Plans are underway for two new international airports: one in San-Pedro, located in the southwest, and another in Bondoukou, in the eastern part of the country. These additions are set to bolster both national and regional air connectivity, enhancing Côte d’Ivoire’s appeal as an African current affairs and business destination.

The PND 2026-2030: a blueprint for structural transformation

Through its latest National Development Program, the Ivorian state is committed to accelerating the nation’s economic transformation. This ambitious plan is built upon several strategic priorities, including the vigorous development of regional economic hubs, intensified industrialization efforts, and the enhanced value creation from local production.

The overarching ambition is for Côte d’Ivoire to achieve upper-middle-income country status by 2030, all while solidifying its achievements in stability and social cohesion.

Mobilizing over 114 trillion FCFA

To realize this transformative vision, the government estimates a substantial financing requirement of 114,838.5 billion FCFA for the 2026-2030 period. The funding strategy relies on a significant allocation split: 30% from the public sector and a robust 70% from the private sector.

In pursuit of these financial goals, Abidjan will host a high-level consultative group meeting on July 8 and 9, 2026. This crucial gathering aims to engage and mobilize international financial partners.

Organized with the vital support of the World Bank, the European Union, the African Development Bank, and the United Nations System, this event will serve as a platform to present Côte d’Ivoire’s comprehensive development vision and attract the necessary investments for its successful implementation.
