Chad’s supreme court upholds succés masra’s 20-year sentence, igniting political outrage

Chad’s Supreme Court delivered its definitive ruling on Thursday, May 21, rejecting the appeal filed by former Prime Minister and leader of Les Transformateurs, Succès Masra. This decision unequivocally confirmed his 20-year prison sentence, a judgment that immediately triggered widespread indignation and profound disappointment among his supporters across the continent, becoming a focal point in African current affairs.

In a strongly worded statement, Les Transformateurs asserted that the Chadian judicial system had “missed a historic opportunity” by upholding the previous year’s verdict against their party president, a move they view as a significant blow to African governance.

The party vehemently condemned the inherently political nature of the proceedings. They stressed that this latest decision by the Supreme Court “reaffirms the deeply political character” of President Masra’s “arbitrary detention,” which has now spanned 371 days. This, they argue, is a clear maneuver to remove a leading opposition figure from the political landscape, impacting English Africa news cycles.

Furthermore, the opposition movement criticized the judiciary for disregarding numerous international calls for Masra’s release, which sought to highlight the injustice and uphold fundamental principles of the rule of law. Supporters of the former Chadian Prime Minister also voiced significant apprehension regarding his health, which they claim has “considerably deteriorated” during his incarceration.

Masra had been convicted on charges of criminal association and complicity in murder, stemming from the tragic Mandakao massacre in May 2025, a village located in the Logone Occidental province. With all national legal avenues now exhausted, the opposition leader’s legal team is reportedly preparing to pursue recourse through international judicial bodies, seeking justice beyond Chad’s borders.
