Cameroon strengthens cocoa export quality with 35 newly trained verifiers

Boosting Cameroon’s cocoa export quality

The National Cocoa and Coffee Board (ONCC), in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), successfully concluded a crucial training session in Douala on June 26, 2026. This initiative saw 35 export warehouse verifiers receive specialized instruction aimed at enhancing the quality of Cameroonian cocoa exports.

Over three intensive days, from June 24 to 26, participants honed their expertise in essential areas such as advanced sampling techniques, rigorous quality control measures, and efficient management of cocoa storage facilities designated for international shipment. Didime Olivier Tchoumi, UNIDO’s principal technical advisor, emphasized that this program is strategically designed to elevate the global competitiveness of both Cameroonian cocoa and coffee. This vital activity forms a key component of the PICS-Cameroun project, generously funded by Japan.

This development follows a significant international triumph for Cameroonian cocoa. On Tuesday, February 20, 2026, Cameroon secured a prestigious gold medal at the 10th edition of the Cacao of Excellence Awards, held concurrently with the renowned Chocoa Trade Fair. This major annual gathering for the cocoa and chocolate industry showcased nearly 191 samples from 45 different origins, each meticulously evaluated for their quality, sustainability, and unique sensory profiles.

Out of the numerous submissions, an elite panel of international sensory and industry experts distinguished only 50 lots. Cameroon’s sample, identified as n°167, proudly claimed the top spot on the podium within the highly competitive Africa & Indian Ocean category. This remarkable achievement builds upon a bronze recognition received in 2023, signaling a clear upward trajectory and significantly improved qualitative competitiveness for Cameroon’s cocoa beans in the discerning “fine and flavour” markets. In these premium segments, taste, authenticity, and sustainability are paramount, often commanding higher prices than traditional commodity cocoa.

Beyond the immediate acclaim of a medal, this distinction firmly establishes Cameroon’s reputation as a terroir capable of producing exceptional cocoa, perfectly aligning with the increasing demand from high-end chocolatiers and specialized international markets. It is anticipated that this success will also stimulate further investment in critical areas such as traceability, advanced technical training, and the structured development of cooperatives. These factors are indispensable for transforming this qualitative performance into tangible, sustainable economic benefits for local cocoa producers across the nation, bolstering African current affairs in agricultural development.
