Cameroon’s evolving marriage landscape: tradition vs. personal freedom
Under Cameroon’s civil law, marriage is built on the principle of freedom of choice. Every individual holds the right to select their own partner and give consent independently. The legal framework strictly requires this consent to be both voluntary and informed, free from any form of coercion or pressure.
Yet despite these legal safeguards, deeply rooted customs continue to shape marriage decisions in certain communities. In parts of the West Region, for instance, parents often take the lead in selecting spouses for their children—a practice justified as a protective measure against potentially unsuitable matches. As one resident from Yaoundé’s Madagascar neighborhood, Waffo Marie Chantal, explains, “When a parent arranges a marriage for their son, it’s to shield them from bad influences. The family background is scrutinized across generations to ensure the potential in-laws aren’t known for laziness. After mutual agreement among relatives, the couple is informed, and the union proceeds according to local traditions.”
For many, such customs are seen as a way to strengthen family bonds rather than merely unite two individuals.
The generational divide is stark. Younger Cameroonians, particularly in urban areas like Yaoundé’s Biyem-Assi district, are increasingly rejecting these age-old practices. Audrey Wandji, a local resident, firmly states, “We’re not in the era where parents dictate marriage partners anymore. I would never accept that. I want a man I love deeply—and that can only be someone I’ve chosen myself.”
Tradition meets modernity in Cameroon’s marriage culture
This tension between tradition and personal autonomy reflects broader societal shifts across Cameroon. While some communities uphold familial authority in marriage decisions, others champion individual liberty—a clash that highlights the country’s cultural diversity and evolving values.
