Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions could trigger a major shake-up at the club this summer, with one of the team’s most decorated players weighing a potential exit. According to former Gunners defender Mikaël Silvestre, Gabriel Martinelli may seek a move if Arsenal secure the championship, citing concerns over his limited playing time this season.
Arsenal on the brink of historic triumph
With two Premier League matches remaining, Arsenal stand just two points clear of Manchester City at the summit. Victory against relegated Burnley and Crystal Palace would secure the Gunners’ first league title in 20 years, a monumental achievement that would make Mikel Arteta the first Arsenal manager since Arsène Wenger to lift the trophy.
City’s challenge remains mathematically alive but would require a flawless finale, with Pep Guardiola’s side needing to overcome Bournemouth and Aston Villa—both in strong form.
Martinelli’s dilemma: ambition vs. playing time
At 22, Martinelli has earned 22 senior caps for Brazil and boasts nearly 300 appearances for Arsenal since his 2019 debut. However, this season has seen his role diminished significantly, with the Brazilian starting just 10 Premier League games. The contrast with teammate Leandro Trossard—who has enjoyed far more game time—has intensified Martinelli’s frustrations.
Silvestre suggests the timing could be ideal for the forward to seek a new challenge: “Gabriel Martinelli is an international player who wants to play regularly. If he leaves after winning the league, it would be the perfect moment. Arsenal would then need to find a replacement, though I don’t see an immediate need elsewhere in the squad.”
Bradley Barcola emerges as potential replacement
Arsenal’s reported interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s rising star Bradley Barcola underscores their intent to address Martinelli’s potential departure. The 21-year-old French winger has showcased electrifying pace and creativity, though Silvestre notes he still requires refinement in certain areas, particularly his finishing.
Silvestre added: “Barcola is already impressive in duels, space creation, and assist provision. With improvements to his shot, he could become a complete player. Right now, he’s not yet a Champions League starter, but his potential is undeniable.”
