African football in uproar as CAF strips Senegal of AFCON 2025 title
The stunning 0-3 forfeiture against Morocco in the AFCON 2025 final has not only cost Senegal the championship but has also thrown African football into an unparalleled crisis of confidence. A wave of criticism has been directed at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from various clubs, experts, and international media outlets.

Recent reports confirm the escalating backlash against the CAF’s controversial ruling. According to Spanish sports daily AS, Egyptian club Pharco FC has declared an indefinite boycott of all CAF-organized tournaments. The club views the decision against Senegal as «unjust, politically motivated and contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship».
Pharco FC is not alone in its stance; numerous other clubs from Egypt and Algeria have voiced solidarity with Senegal, hinting at potential future boycotts of continental competitions. Prominent teams like South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Tanzania’s Simba SC have condemned the verdict as «disgraceful», warning it could establish a perilous precedent for the sport across Africa.
The controversy stems from the CAF’s earlier ruling that Senegal had forfeited their AFCON 2025 final match against Morocco, resulting in a 0-3 loss. The official judgment cited Senegal’s violation of regulations by abandoning the field in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco during the closing moments of regular time.
What amplified the dispute was the fact that the game resumed following a 10-minute stoppage. Senegal returned to play, maintained their 1-0 lead into extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye, and even celebrated lifting the trophy in Rabat on January 18.
However, a subsequent appeal from Morocco prompted the CAF to unexpectedly reverse the outcome, declaring Morocco the 3-0 victor and awarding the championship title to the host nation.
This sudden decision sent shockwaves throughout the global football community. French sports newspaper L’Équipe labeled it among the «most bizarre and controversial» rulings in modern football history, while The Athletic highlighted the unprecedented nature of such a precedent in a major continental championship.
Many football analysts and experts have also questioned the legitimacy of this ruling. They argued that if Senegal had indeed committed a serious infringement, the referee and match organizers should have either halted the game or declared a default loss immediately, rather than waiting until after the final whistle to alter the result following Morocco’s appeal.
The Senegalese Football Federation subsequently confirmed its plans to appeal the decision to both the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and FIFA. African media outlets have even suggested that the Senegal national team is considering withdrawing from future CAF competitions due to what they perceive as unfair treatment.
This incident severely damages the reputation of African football, especially given that the AFCON is regarded as the continent’s most prestigious national team tournament. Many observers fear that if this crisis continues, the credibility and competitive integrity of CAF-organized events could be significantly jeopardized in the coming years.
