Behind the scenes of a political falling-out

Ousmane Sonko addressed the circumstances surrounding his removal from office, emphasizing that tensions with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye-Diakhar had been building for some time. « What we’ve experienced over the past two years differs significantly from our original vision outlined in the Project,” he stated, adding that discussions about his potential dismissal had already taken place.

A pivotal meeting at the presidential palace

Despite these disagreements, Sonko chose to remain in his role to avoid triggering a political rupture. He recounted that after his address to the National Assembly last Friday, the President summoned him to the presidential palace for a private meeting.

« He expressed that continuing our partnership would be challenging due to statements I had made that posed complications,” Sonko revealed. « I responded that the decision ultimately rested with him.”

He clarified that their conversation was not a negotiation but rather an acknowledgment of irreconcilable differences. « I made it clear that we did not engage in discussions aimed at finding common ground,” he said.

An unexpected offer to step down

The former Prime Minister disclosed that he had offered to resign from his position three times, proposing to transition to the National Assembly if his presence hindered the executive’s operations. « Each time, I suggested we discuss my departure and appoint a new Prime Minister from PASTEF,” he explained. « The President declined each offer.”

Sonko mentioned that Minister Alioune Sall was present during some of these exchanges. He further revealed that President Faye had requested time to reflect before their next meeting. « Upon returning home, I received a message stating that a decision had been made,” he recounted.

Sonko concluded by noting that his official dismissal was announced shortly afterward. « I subsequently saw Oumar Samba Ba announce my removal,” he said.
