Senegal parliament speaker urges african parliamentary reform

During the 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU), Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly of Senegal, held a meeting on June 4 with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, the Chair of the Executive Committee of the continental parliamentary body.

The two leaders discussed the APU’s current operations, long-term objectives, and strategic role amid Africa’s pressing political, economic, and security challenges. Sonko emphasized the urgent need to revitalize the institution, calling for sweeping reforms to enhance its efficiency and amplify its influence in shaping the continent’s political and institutional agenda.

The President of Senegal’s National Assembly underscored the critical importance of aligning the APU’s recommendations with the decisions of the African Union. In his view, tighter coordination between the two bodies would strengthen policy coherence across Africa and ensure that continental initiatives translate into tangible benefits for the people.

This high-level dialogue reflects a broader push among African leaders to reinforce parliamentary cooperation and foster a governance model that is both responsive and impactful for citizens.
