Senegal opposition demands removal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko from National Assembly
The Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) has called for the immediate removal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko from the National Assembly, labeling his presence in the legislative body as unconstitutional and illegitimate. The coalition’s stance has reignited fierce debates over the legality of his parliamentary status amid ongoing political tensions.
In a strongly worded statement released on June 3, 2026, the FDR demanded that Ousmane Sonko step down from his parliamentary seat, arguing that his dual role as head of government and deputy violates established legal provisions. The coalition emphasized that the current situation represents a clear breach of electoral and constitutional norms.
Political alliances rally against parliamentary maneuver
The opposition front praised a growing wave of political parties and civic movements that have condemned what they describe as a parliamentary coup attempt. Several opposition lawmakers have also taken legal action by filing a case with the Constitutional Council, seeking to challenge Sonko’s contested return to the Assembly.
The FDR highlighted that Article LO172 of the Electoral Code stipulates that any elected official who assumes a ministerial position must resign from their parliamentary mandate within eight days, failing which their seat is automatically forfeited. The coalition further argued that recent amendments to the Assembly’s internal regulations cannot override the binding constitutional and legislative provisions.
According to the FDR, the process that enabled Sonko’s reinstatement in the National Assembly constitutes a direct violation of the Constitution, the Electoral Code, and the Assembly’s own rules of procedure. The coalition has called for the immediate annulment of this illegal act and insists on Sonko’s removal from the legislative chamber.
The FDR has urged all stakeholders—civil society, legal experts, and citizens—to unite in defense of the Republic’s constitutional order, laws, and democratic institutions. The ongoing controversy surrounding Sonko’s parliamentary status continues to dominate political discourse in Senegal, fueling deep divisions within the nation’s leadership.
