A recent propaganda video from the Al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group JNIM has provided a detailed look at their April 25 assault on the military camp and airport in Sévaré, a pivotal location near Mopti in central Mali.

This attack on Sévaré was part of a series of coordinated offensives launched by JNIM jihadists and the Tuareg separatists of the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA) against various Malian cities.

The propaganda footage serves as a stark illustration of JNIM’s evolving strategic capabilities, according to analyst Bakary Sambe, director of the Timbuktu Institute.

Sambe emphasizes, “JNIM has demonstrated its capacity to penetrate urban environments and highly strategic zones such as the Sévaré airport and military camp. This also underscores their ability to challenge both the Malian army and its Russian allies.”

The coordinated April attacks led to the recapture of Kidal by separatists and the assassination of Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, near Bamako. Additionally, these assaults resulted in 16 injuries, as confirmed by the Malian government.

Bakary Sambe further elaborates on JNIM’s approach, explaining, “What JNIM has successfully achieved is gradually entrenching Mali in a state of neither peace nor war. Within this twilight zone, they are deploying an increasingly aggressive strategy.” He also points to the rise of figures like Bina Diarra, a JNIM spokesperson, who helps to position the group “as a legitimate political actor.”

The release of this propaganda video coincides with an announcement by Malian authorities offering rewards for information leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders, signaling the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts against the group in a significant development for African current affairs.
