Bénin and Niger have taken a decisive step toward strengthening bilateral ties with the establishment of a joint expert committee. The announcement follows a high-level working visit by Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni to Niamey, where he met with his Nigerien counterpart Abdourahamane Tiani to discuss key cooperation priorities.

The committee, tasked with evaluating border reopening conditions, has been given a 15-day deadline to assess existing challenges and recommend solutions. This initiative reflects both nations’ commitment to reviving cross-border trade and enhancing regional stability.

Bilateral relations take center stage

The two leaders underscored the deep historical and cultural bonds uniting their countries, emphasizing the need to revitalize existing cooperation frameworks. Among the priorities discussed were economic integration, regional security, and shared development goals.

In a joint statement, they highlighted the importance of regular high-level consultations, including the revival of the Niger-Bénin Joint Cooperation Commission. This mechanism is seen as vital for sustaining long-term collaboration.

Security challenges drive closer collaboration

With persistent security threats in the Sahel posing risks to regional stability, both presidents agreed on the urgency of coordinated action. Terrorism and cross-border criminal activities remain major obstacles to economic progress, prompting calls for a unified response.

The discussions reflected a shared conviction that enhanced security cooperation is essential for fostering sustainable development and safeguarding the interests of their populations.

Border closure prompts urgent revival of ties

Following the productive talks, President Wadagni extended an official invitation to President Tiani for a reciprocal state visit to Bénin. This gesture underscores the growing momentum toward deeper cooperation and mutual trust.
