The leader of the National Assembly of Sénégal, Ousmane Sonko, has extended a formal welcome to delegations from across the continent as they gather in Dakar for the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee, held on June 3 and 4, 2026.

During his speech, Ousmane Sonko conveyed his deep satisfaction and pride in seeing parliamentary leaders assemble in the capital. On behalf of the legislative body and the citizens of Sénégal, he shared his brotherly regards and wished the participants a productive stay.

The parliamentary head emphasized the critical need for enhanced collaboration among African legislatures, particularly as the continent faces a complex array of political, economic, and security hurdles.

“At a moment when our continent must rise to meet various trials, the strengthening of parliamentary ties is clearly an essential priority,” he remarked.

Ousmane Sonko also reaffirmed his unwavering support for Panafrican principles, asserting that Africa’s destiny should be forged by its own people in accordance with their specific values and aspirations.

He expressed his hope that this 85th session would act as a catalyst for deeper African integration and the realization of the shared dreams of the continent’s population.

He concluded by wishing the delegates an excellent time in Dakar, ending with a powerful message of solidarity: “Long live African parliamentary cooperation. Long live a united and sovereign Africa.”
